What is the best way to lay grass seed?
Question:
Answers:
Grass seed needs contact with the soil to ensure the best germination rate. The best way that I know to lay grass seed is with a slit seeder (medium sized areas) or a brillion seeder pulled behind a tractor (large sized areas). Both will create a grove in the soil for the seed and then meter out the seed at the proper rate. You do not want too little seed (grass too thin) or too much (new grass too dense, too much competition and results in week lawn). They will then roll the grass seed into the soil grove for maximum soil contact. If you have a really small area, rake first, spread seed with a drop seeder at the proper rate and lightly roll the area to press the grass seed into contact with the soil. Now keep the seed wet. Frequent, short watering works best with seed because there are no roots yet. Once seed is wet, it must be kept moist or the seed will die.
With a hand held spreader.
Make sure the ground is good and wet, use a metal rake to make 1/2 grooves then spread the seed usins a push or hand held spreader. in small patches les than 4x4' you can just use your hand and just sprinkle it. Wait about 2 hours then water lightly and evenly that way the grass seed doesn't shift. For best results spread old hay about 2-4" thick. It will speed up the growing process and prtect it while it grows. All you have to do is rake it after a few weeks. Makes a great mulch too!
ive just done it and all i did was over sow and the trick is to keep soil from drying out .when you see the shoots coming up you just keep doing what you did at first till it gets to about 4 to 5 inches and cut it with a hovering mower (electric)and when you water it make it a deep watering and you will find you can water less.dont let it grow to long without cutting it and in a few months you can start walking on it!!its very rewarding and im proud of my lawn because i grew it!!you can buy a seed spreader from nursury or just spread a decent covering every where.i used more than the recomended box instructions and noticed it was a lot thicker and looks heaps better.and make sure you use a soft watering nozle so as not to dissplace the seeds.you can lightly sprinkle some top soil on top if you like.
