What do i fill a 4ft tall plant container with.?
Question:I'm trying to find a way around filling it with just compost, because of the weight, plus I don't think I would need that much compost as I'm planting a box to grow as a small sphere.
Answers:
I've seen people use stryrofoam to fill the bottom of large containers. Doesn't add much to the weight and fills the bottom portion. I have a deep terrarium and I use stryrofoam as fill to give me some elevation without the weight. I'd give yourself about of foot of good growing medium so the roots have a chance establish themselves. Also make sure there's drainage in the container.
Fill it up by threequarters with polystyrene.
If a box tree that will probably be in the container for a few years you must use a soil based compost, like John Innes, do not use multi compost. If as you say the size of the container is rather large put some house bricks or large stones in the container first to reduce the volume of soil. From a weight and transporting point of view,I would fill the container at the site where it will be kept and plant the box in it there.Box trees are very slow growing so you would only need to trim it once or twice a year.
A 4ft tall plant.....
that's kinda tall for a planter.. I would worry about it being "top heavy" with it having no weight on the bottom.. But you can try filling it 1/2 way with those "packing Peanuts" and then mix in topsoil and compost or cow manure for planting in.
Good Luck
fill it 1/2 with compost and 1/2 with normal garden soil and mix them togeather.
a good place to store your pet circus midget
I would leave it empty because you can jump into it to escape from your wife.
