Gardens a mess?
Question:ive got a 70 ft garden full of weeds and nettles but i cant use a rotivator because it has bricks in and cant get a mini digger in back garden too this garden hasnt been touch in 25 years any help or ideas thankyou
Answers:
just get in there and start pulling weeds.Wear long sleeved shirt ,Pants, and leather work gloves.(nettles)
Weed preferably after a heavy soaking rain or a watering (weeds will be easier to pull) and chip away at it till the job is done, and as you go, add mulch to the weeded area to keep the weeds out! do not expect it to be done in a day...it may take a few but it will be worth it. P.S. save those bricks for a pathway or small patio to set a bird bath on and take before and after pictures to show off your accomplishment!.
GOOD LUCK WITH IT!
I took the bricks out of mine. It was alot of work, but it was well worth it!
If you can be patient, you can start the garden all over again. Mow or cut down everything as close as you can, dig out what you can as well. Then, buy some landscape fabric (weed block) from Home Depot or any garden center and cover the entire yard with it, or areas where you can't dig yourself, and pin it down with some of your bricks or use mulch, like decorative bark chips.
In a few months, everything under the fabric will be dead, and the soil should be a bit more pliable. Also all the decayed organic material will help fertilize the soil. At this point, (should be about fall), you can lay down some good quality topsoil and roll out sod, or reseed the lawn and plant some perennials. The perennials will most likely be dormant if the weather is cool, but they will grow again in spring. Many shrubs could be planted in fall as well. By next year, your garden will be a bit more manageable.
Roundup herbicide will work, if you want chemical free I heard vinegar can be used but adds acid to soil or get some black vinyl(similar to pond liner and lay over ground on a very hot day (must be in direct sun) It will bake out all vegetation.
