How do you kill shrubs/bushes without cutting it down?

Question:Tired of trimming these hedges, and I get an allergic reaction to the branches when it scratches me. They are midsize hedges. I don't want to use toxiic checmicals , nor cut the hedges down, what else can I do?

Answers:
I know white vinegar will kill weeds it should kill the shrub.

Without chemicals it can be difficult to kill those bushes, however if you consider going that way, any brush killer by brush-b-gone may do the trick for you.
Sorry hun there is no miracle herbicide that will kill shrubs and make them disappear. Even if you kill them, they will be there until they decay, and that will be a long long time. you will still have to chop them up and dig up the stump.
You've listed most of the common ways of removing shrubs but there are a few others to try:

1. Cover the plants with thick black plastic sheeting: the lack of light and increased heat will eventually kill them but it may take a while. This technique works great for weeds but i don't know that it's ever been tried for shrubs

2. Pour boiling water over plants; again this works best with weeds, but it may kill a shrub too, especially if you pour it over the roots.

However you kill it, you will then be left with a dead shrub which will look unsightly and you will still have to cut this down.
