Answers:
you have to hire a landscaper to grind it.
Have a tree service bring in a stum grinder and grind it down to a level far below ground level.
go to your nearest hardware store and buy some stump- out which gets rid of tree stumps. you will find stump-out in the lawn and garden section.
best i know how... is a lil digging 2 expose most the roots .. a chain hooked 2 a ford f250 ... and rip it out of the ground ...
or rent a back-hoe.. then get some top soil and fill in the hole
You can rent a tree stump grinder which will knaw it down below ground level within a few minutes - a big ugly piece of equipment that comes with its own trailer.
You can get a large paddle bit and drill a series of holes into the trunk and put water into them regularly. There are also some tree rotting chemicals at nursery centers or online.
You can get a chain saw and trying to avoid hitting the dirt cut a series of slots across the top of the stump. By angling the cuts, you should be able to pull out wedges of wood. Then use the water on the stump method.
Get a back ho and dig it out, or do it by hand.
If it is 5'8", you could cut it down as close to the ground as you can, and then drill a big hole in the center, that will make it rot faster.
Depending on how fast you want it gone, here are two ways. the second has been told to me, I am not positive that it helps.
1. At some large tool rental places, they sell a stump chipper, that YOU use. It chips off pieces of the stump and can go down under the ground as for as you want to. i am guessing that it would be about 3 hours work.
2. I have heard that pounding RUSTY nails into the stump will cause it to rot much faster.
Good luck
We removed one this past weekend using this video- it was very helpful.

Hope it helps.
Sand or cut out as deep down as you can. Then fill it with soil and plant something in it. This will help disguise what is left, and the new plant's roots will eat away at what's remaining.
i would cut it off low to the ground and dig out the center, it makes a wonderful planter
You can get a product called stump remover or you can try rock salt
Rent the stump grinder or hire someone but don't be shocked at the price. Or the stump remover others have mentioned. Available at garden centers and mail order/ online nursery companies. It is ammonium nitrate. Yup the same fertilizer used to make bombs. It can be used two ways.
1) Drill several holes down into the stump. Fill with ammonium nitrate and water it often enough just to keep moist. The nitrogen speeds up the rotting.
2) ( it won't blow up- I promise ) Drill the holes and fill. Then pour some diesel fuel onto the ammonium nitrat and wait a day. The diesel should have soaked in. You might add more. after a couple of days light the diesel fuel. Hard to get started charcoal starter helps. The flames will die quickly but it will smolder and burn the stump to the point you can pretty much just break it up. It will even burn below ground level. Both methods are on the label.
Here's an article that outlines the pros and cons of stump removal methods.
