My rhubarb plant is HUGE.how can I trim it back?
Question:I have a rhubarb plant that doesn't get a lot of use unless family members pull off what they want. It's huge! Probably almost 4 feet tall!
I mainly leave it, as is, for looks (fills in the backyard nicely up against the fence by the garden).
My question is can I trim it back and if I do, will it continue to grow bigger again during the season? If I can make it smaller.how much can I pull off?
Also it keeps trying to go to seed (which I pull off)..does that ruin the stalks or can they still be used for baking?
Answers:
grab ahold of the stalks and pull it will take the stalk off with out wrecking the plant.. just take as many off as you need to make the plant look like you want to.. take a sharp knife and cut off the seeds that are forming.. because you aren't picking it thinks it is done for the year.. so go ahead and pick your plant and it will continure to grow so it will give you the back ground of full plant that you want.
you know you can pick it and sell it also.. lots of people love rhubarb and don't have any where to get it.. so help them out sell it by the bundles or put up a sign that says you have it and tell them to come and buy it.. fresh..
at the end of the year i just mow mine off and it comes back just as good the following year.. it takes alot of abuse..
happy gardening.
You can cut them right down to the base. I would recommend setting aside a day to can a bunch of rhubarb or find someone who would like to do this, and provide THEM with the rhubarb.
Here is a like to proper care of rhubarb.
