What just happened to my tractor?
Question:i was mowing the lawn whoop-dee-doo, then the engine rpms dropped quite a bit, like i hit a thick patch of grass, but i didnt. i stopped and it went away. a few minutes later, it did the same thing. i shut off the blades and the engine sounded terribly, it didnt have a nice smooth rhythm. it sounded like a half dead lawnmower. i revved it a few times then heard a loud clang. i dont know if i shut the engine off or it died by itself. i saw some smoke comeing from the muffler area and it smelled terrible. any idea what it could be?
please help! i have 4 lawns to mow that are 1+ acre each. i have no more working mowers!!

Try doing a complete oil change. Next remove the spark plug and spray a small amount, no more than a tablespoon full of oil into the spark plug hole. Try turning over the mower with the plug removed. This will reduce compression and make it easier to turn over. It will also lube up the piston walls. If it will turn over replace the spark plug and try starting it again. If it will not turn over with the plug removed I suggest digging a deep hole and hiding from your father until you are about 30.
Sounds like catastrophic failure, i.e. thrown connecting rod, blown head gasket, cracked piston, broken valve, nothing small or easy from the sounds of it.
When was the last time you had it serviced? Go buy a new 100 series John Deere for 1500 and let them take care of it!
yep you got trouble my friend sounds like it gave up maybe blew check to see if its holding oil dont try to start it again check filters for excessive oil look to see if their is any hairline cracks in the casing if so its gonna be costly
Oh my! Sounds like the engine ran out of oil(when it slowed down like heavy grass) and broke the connecting rod (the loud clang). The smoke probably was oil coming from a hole in the side of the engine behind the muffler where the connecting rod came through.
I'm afraid it is time for a short block.
You messed up the engine, on lawn tractors you might as well get a new engine.
