How to mulch around a tree?

Use a shredded hardwood mulch and keep at 2 inches deep- no more, no less (to keep weeds down, moisture in, and prevent fungus). Keep the mulch away from the base of the trunk of the tree a few inches also to prevent fungus growth. Smooth out and water in!
