R orchids hard to take care of?

I've had both Cymbidium and Phalanopsis Orchids. As long as you use the proper growing medium and keep them out of direct sunlight, they can be quite easy to care for. The trick is to get them to flower after you have owned it for a while.
Orchids have a leaf growing phase then they'll flower, but only if you let the plant cool to the 60's at night. Orchids are certainly beautiful and a great conversation piece. Good luck!
I grow two varieties and the Epidendrum or Mexican orchid grows like a weed in my yard. They require very little care, have beautiful huge orange cones and make babies like rabbits. I used to sell them to a wholesale nursery, but now that the owner passed away, I literally give them away. Even people who have brown thumbs have a hard time killing them whether they put them in the ground (we're in zone 9) or grow them indoors. I really think it depends on the type of orchid you want to grow as to the care it needs.
Orchids can be challenging to take care the main thing you have to remember is not to give them too much water. I recommend using a pebble system and add a tiny amount of water to the bottom where the pebbles are. Then the plants roots will suck up a little bit of water when needed. You can also use a water bottle once a week. The orchids I had lasted longer than flowers like snapdragons and other annual garden plants.
remember to keep it away from direct sunlight! three to four feet from any window is fine cuz the direct sunlight will cuz the leaves to burn and possible death of the plant! water once a week and fertilize in the early spring only!
