How do I keep squirrels from digging up my mulch?
Question:I just recently planted new bushes and covered the surrounding ground with mulch. How can I keep the squirrels from digging holes in it? Is there something I can sprinkle on it?? Thanks!

If it is not a large area, try placing a small saucer of ammonia where they like to dig. You might also try going to a sporting goods store and getting wolf urine and sprinkling it in the area. I have been told that the same result can be achieved with human urine. I had the weird problem of squirrels coming up on my front stoop and taking a crap. The ammonia seems to be keeping them away.
Nope. Nothing you can do short of killing the squirrels. Any recommendation for deterring squirrels has never been effective. You are dealing with a very intelligent rodent.
throw out some moth balls
I have had good luck with Hot Pepper Wax Spray. I got it at Ace Hardware for around $13.00 a bottle. It covers a pretty large area. It works for about 5 days, unless it rains, then you have to reapply.
I want to try Black Pepper or some other type of pepper that you can get in the spice aisle at the Dollar Store, But I have not tried that yet.
I used cayenne pepper and red pepper from the spice isle at the grocery store for cats in my flower beds. it seemed to help alot. But it is something that once it rains several times, you must sprinkle it on again. also i found this site very useful for those kind of questions and they will have several ideas on what you can do.
