Tomato Plant and Runner Bean question . . .?
Question:My tomato plants are growing in the veg patch. Last October I dug in some well rotted horse manure. I have noticed the bottom leaves of the tom plants have gone yellow and appear to be dying off. Is this a problem and if so, what's causing it?
My runner beans have also gone from being a deep green to a much paler green but have not been planted in the same place as the toms.
Answers:
You are growing the same as me. The lower leaves of the tomatoes going yellow is normal, do not worry. You should not fertilize the toms till you see flowers, just plain water till then. The runner beans need plenty of manure, they thrive on it, but if you are in the UK this awful weather is slowing the growth down. Use tomarite to feed the beans.
I think horse manure is far too strong even when well rotted.
I have heard on one of those gardening programmes that you have to be very sparing with it!
First, I don't know what stinging nettle fert. is, so I don't know if it could harm.
But tomatoes get fungal disease and need to be sprayed with a fungicide. Your garden center can help you with this. And also beans get disease too. But a lack of nitrogen can cause yellowing of leaves.
Are you allowing your tomatoes to lie on the ground. It is best to stake them and tie them up off the soil. I use metal fence post for this and then mulch with straw.
Also don't overwater.
Sounds like you are overdoing the fertilisers,Lack of nitrogen possibly . All you can do now is hope for the best and perhaps try a liquid tomato balanced fertiliser to correct any shortfall in essential nutrients.Give the same to the beans as well.
possible splash back with fertilizer and water, only water the soil not the leaves,
