Is there an easy way to get tree stumps out of the yard?
Question:There are several trees that was cut down by our electric company and they didn't grind the stumps. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of the stumps? I have heard of products that decay the wood but I can't find any.
Answers:
get the tree stump as low as possible, then drill holes in the trunk and add motor oil. This will seep down to the roots and starts to decay faster. They start chopping away.
tried this and it worked for me.
go rent a stump grinder, they are pretty cheap to rent; and easy to use.
Dig as much as possible around the stump, then use 1/2 ton Pick up ,a chain or tow rope ...hook her up and pull! Trunk removal is a hard job no matter how you do it.
If the stumps are dry and dead you can cover them with charcoal and burn them out. Of course if you have acecss to a tractor that makes things easier.
When burning stumps out be careful that the roots are not close to any buildings.
if you can afford it, there are stump grinders that actually grind them down to the roots. as an added bonus, you get some nice sawdust mulch for flower beds etc:

There are links for this site that should help you out.
You can inoculate them with various gourmet mushrooms and they aren't the little rubber things you get on pizza. After 2-4yrs. you're left with nothing but compost. I garden around mine to help shelter and keep them moist. Check out "Mushroompeople" or "Fungi Perfecti" to order kits. Momo's idea would be counter productive and illegal. When I lived in termite country I would pour used motor oil around fence posts, a poor mans Orkin. There is a termite pheromone, but that would be a real can of worms LOL. What Momo may have been refering to is, drilling holes and filling them with Stump-Out, which is nothing more than sodium nitrate (salt peter) or ammonium nitrate fertilizer. You dissolve it with water allowing it to soak into the wood and repeat every day or two over the course of a week. Then you let the stump dry out and light it with charcoal fluid. After the intial fire the stump will continue to smolder, following the roots deep underground with the nitrates suppling the oxygen. This will leave a hole in the ground to be filled in later.
