Try Bayer Weed Control. It takes care of most weeds that sprout in the yard and typically does not hard other plants.
Thistles are really tough to get rid of.
If they are mixed in with your grass, try Ortho Weed-B-Gone. You will probably have to hit them several times.
If they are not in a lawn, but in a flower bed, try Round-up. Be careful when using Round-up, because it will kill most of the plants that it hits, including grass.
Pulling thistles is almost useless. Their roots can be over a foot long. If you miss the tiniest piece of root, it will send up a new plant.
