My front lawn slopes, whats the most economical and efficient way to correct?

Question:I live in a 50 yr old house. It's a rental, so I can't invest alot of money, however, I don't mind investing time.
The grass is fine in the middle where its level, but towards the side walk it slopes down, I assume this is from years of erosion.
Its almost impossible to keep it wet and green. Infact lately the grass has disappeared completely, and its just dirt. I hate wasting all that water, it just runs onto the sidewalk.
Do I have to rototill the entire lawn to even it out, or is there an easier way?
I appreciate your help!

Answers:
Plant some groundcover instead of grass. Use something native, not that nasty English Ivy (unless you're in England, of course). You won't have to move a ton of soil, or build a retaining wall, which is what you'd probably have to do to level it. And you won't have to mow it either, and it will look so much nicer than plain old grass.

If you want to get creative, build a rain garden - a garden designed to catch water before it runs off. See:

There are some really nice plants you can grow in a rain garden.

One can try terracing the slope if it is large enough. One can press in large (one to one and a half inch stone pieces) gravel with gaps where grass grows.
