What to Plant in Lower Alabama?
Question:I want to start a vegetable garden, grow some flower bushes, and grow some fruit trees. I live in Lower Alabama, in Eufaula, and I'm not sure what types of plants thrive well in this area. Any advice? Like, what plants, when to plant (as seeds), how much shade, light, and water each one needs.
Answers:
you can grow almost anything your heart desires!
i'm from shelby county...a couple of hrs north of you and grew all kinds of things.
drive around and see what others are growing. if you see a yard that you think is gorgeous, stop, knock on the door and tell the home owner. they will most likely give you a garden tour and teach you more than you could ever learn from the ppl here. go to local nurseries and walk through. ask questions. gardeners love to talk about plants!
ok...you can grow peaches, apple, pecans, and plums to name some of the trees.
crape myrtle, azalea, camellia, forsythia, gardenia, butterfly bush, quince, witch hazel, and this list goes on and on and on. it all depends on the space you have and what look you are trying to achieve.
oh, the vegatables! yellow squash, okra, corn, green beans, zucchini, tomatoes, watermelons, and more. that is the summer list. in winter you can grow turnip greens, spinach, rape (yes this is a vegetable) lettuces, collards, and on it goes.
ask locals to get the answers you really need. also a subscription to southern living would probably help you.
hope you find some usable info here.
My grandad grew asparagus, okra, snap beans, carrots, watermelons, cantelopes.
Also had lots of figs and blueberries and strawberries.
As far as fruit treas, you may do well with a peach tree.
I'm in the north now but Grandad was in Baldwin County, about an hour or so west of ya.
