Caterpillars in pecan tree? How long will stay? can we prevent from coming back?

Question:Caterpillars are about 1 inch + white furry. Has about 3or4 big webs so far.

Answers:
I'd hammer them with something if I was you. They sound like bagworms and can really do some damage to a tree, especially a smaller tree. I'd hit them with some insecticide, or at least some insecticidal soap or something.

They will stay until the change into the moths or whatever. Then lay eggs again. So the best thing is to get them sprayed.
There is two things that you can do.

1. Knock those sacks out of the trees. The local birds will come by and eat the worms that crawl out of them. Once the sack is out of the tree you can get some type of rod and hit the branches with it to knock out the remaining ones.

2. Go to a garden store and tell someone about your problem. There is a spray you can buy to spray up into the trees to get rid of them.
spray the with dawn dish washing soap 1 or 2 oz of dawn then fill with water in pump up sprayer will get rid of all the bugs in your tree and it will not harm the environment.
