Grass Seed for State of Virginia?

Question:I have very sandy/clay like soil. I've tried several brands with no real success. Just tried Pennington Kentucky Blue and it only took in spots (not the spots I wanted it to). What would someone suggest for poor soil conditions like mine?

Answers:
I used to live in Blacksburg, and I don't necessarily think that soil quality is your problem. You need to find a grass suitable to shade. I would recommend a fine leaf fescue that grows in almost full shade. They are low maintenance and require very little mowing (2-5 times per year).

sounds to me like it wouldn't be a bad idea to amend some good (outside) soil into ur yard first before even thinking about grass seed! maybe a truck load or two, level it off, then till it if u have access to one, then lay ur seed! u'd prbably have better results! it'll take some work, but if done now and done correctly... u could have a good turf of grass going into fall if not sooner! good luck! life ain't easy and it sounds like ur situation isn't either! good luck.
