What is the best general fertilizer for a home gardener?

Question:

Answers:
Miracle-Gro has several fertilizers that are relatively inexpensive. I recently did a science fair project on plants using Miracle-Gro, Scotts, and K-Gro fertilizers. Miracle-Gro is the best fertilizer on the market. Miracle-Gro fertilzers range from $2-$20 depending on how much you buy.

cow manure
a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 provides nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus.. a plant's major nutrients.

That's the best general answer I can give you.

There are better fertilizers out there, but not all ferts are appropriate for all purposes.
I use this with great results

I like compost (for fertilizing)

flowers you can use just about anything (read the cheap stuff)
Vegis = you may want to use an organic fertilizer (zoo doo
Cottonseed meal, blood meal, fish emulsion, manure)

Happy growing...
Go with Julie, except, you can purchase the same 10-10-10 with minerals at most Landscape Supply Stores (no box-stores) You can use this on the turf, in the garden, in houseplants.

It is cheap in the bulk 50lb bag. Great on turf in late fall to aid in quick green-up, great at this time of year for summer stress. The Garden plants love it. The extra mineral compounds adds to the roots of every plant- turf, shrub, flower- and indoor.
home made organic compost. However if that is too much try mircle grow. I heard a rumor that they have a new organic mixture. Also, an an insectaside use a little soapy water. its better for you than insectacides
Compost, either make your own or store bought ( prefer to make my own). You also may be one of the lucky people that live in a town that makes its own compost and gives it away to its residents. you can either apply it just as it comes from the compost pile, or you can make a compost tea, and apply it during watering. you take a good amount of the compost , put it in cheese cloth and place it in a large 5 gallon bucket, let it steep and then apply it to you plants. Either way you are providing organic matter and nutrients to you soil promoting a healthy blance to your garden naturally.
Give everything a little bit of fish, blood and bone at the start of the growing season to replace what the winter rain has washed away.

Try to top dress with some organic material (garden compost if you have it, the stuff out of old grow bags or pre packaged stuff if you are posh!) I try to avoid cow/horse muck because of the amount of weed seeds you will be getting with it.

But the very best thing to use is liquid sea weed - which seems to make everything really lush and healthy looking. As its highly diluted it's really economical (I used less than one bottle last year in my garden and allotment)

Best of all is the fact that all of the above is organic so you don't have to worry about if what you are eating/sniffing/rolling around on is gonna poison you!
My plants seem to love plantea. Price is also quite reasonable.
Deodorized manure bought in bags.
