Need help to put a dry well in my back yard?
Question:

I'm doing one right now. I have routed the run-off from two downspouts into grates fitted to elbows, connected to black corrugated pipe. It leads out away from the house, buried underground, to a pit. I have an old garbage can that i drilled holes in.. I will line the pit with landscape fabric, set the trash can on a gravel base, put more gravel around the can, fill the can itself with some broked brick and other rubble. Then I will secure the end of my drainage pipe to the garbage can with a piece of wire (i cut a "U" shape in the top side of the can), and then cover the top with more landscape fabric and fill back in with dirt.
I've got enough digging to do around here!
But if you were just wanting the "how" part...it really is mostly just digging.
1) Dig a big hole.
2) Fill with coarse rock.
3) Topping it can vary...hardware cloth (like chicken wire but tighter), with smaller gravel on top of that, and landscaping fabric over the top of that, and "tucked in" to the surrounding landscaping. The fabric on top will prevent the soil from your yard from being washed into the dry well and filling it up.
Oh - and of course, you want to place the dry well where the drainage problem is - the low point in the yard where the "ponding" happens.
