The fish in my small 100 gallon tank, jump out of the pond, why do they do this?
Question:We recently set up a small 100 gallon pond in our front yard. We have bull heads, blue gill. Up until yesterday, we have had no problems with these fish jumping out, this afternoon, while looking at the fish, we noticed that there were 4 or 5 of these fish laying on the rocks beside the pond. Can someone give me ideas or something else to keep my fish in the pond.
Answers:
they are probably not used to being confined in such a small swimming area. Think of it this way you are used to living in a 2000 sq ft home, then all of a sudden you get crammed into a 5 x 5 closet, you are probably going to want to get out.
Good Luck!
YOUR TANK MAY BE TOO SMALL
There are 3 things that come to my mind. One is that it is spawning season currently for bluegill so they may be trying to find other waters. Two... they might be seeing flies or mosquitoes which is a part of any fishs' diet and are trying to get to them. Or three they maybe getting scarred by birds flying over or other predators. Try to add some natural foliage around the pond. You can also put colored chicken wire, a thin gauge, over the top. Hope this helps! :)
they want to be free man! they just want to be free.
i once knew a guy whose goldfish did that...turns out it was because he kept the bowl on top of the refrigerator, which tends to get hot. he kept putting the fish back in, and they died.
so...ARE YOUR FISH HOT? I suggest you check your pond water temp and see if you can find some literature on what your species is normally found in (or can tolerate). try giving them some shade and/or they may need a deeper pond.
P.S. this is in your front yard? then maybe the paperboy is walking through it and splashing them out.
Watch the water level. Fish can jump out when water level gets to high. Especially a good chance after a big rainfall.
Make a mark in your pond and try to keep it in that range.
