What is the best grass seed to plant in red clay?

Question:My yard needs some sort of erosion control there is very little grass in it alot of trees but no grass the dirt is nothing but red clay what is the best seed to use that will grow in this soil???

Answers:
Pure red clay will be tough to start anything growing. I have had surprising good luck with a Fescue mix in my yard in heavy yellow clay. Once it gets started, fescue is pretty tough. If fescue doesn't grow well in your area, contact a local garden center for species that do well. If all else fails, you may have to spend the money to bring in 4" of good topsoil.

i think you need to buy some top soil and put on you clay before you try to plant grass..we sell top soil in rolla mo
sounds like you live around Tennessee, as we have that type of soil. best thing to do is thin out a few of your trees so more light and water reach the ground. once this is accomplished I would add a truck load of topsoil to the existing clay you have now and reseed entire yard. fertilize as directed and water daily for the first year.
You're either gonna need topsoil and grass seed, or sod. Either way, your best bet is probably www.1800topsoil.com or call 1-800-TOPSOIL. They have landscapers all over the country and most of them deliver. Good luck!
