Black Dust in my grass?

Question:here in the last couple days, there has been several black/dark patches in my grass. it looks like black chalk or possibly mold attached to the blades of grass. im not sure why its happening and why its happening only in patches and not in bigger areas.

i live in the midwest and i have bluegrass sod (the sod is about 2 months old)

any information on what it is and how to make it go away would be appreciated

Nick's exactly right.. it's likely a fungus that's growing because of all of the recent rain and heat. You can buy antifungal agents, like daconil that are effective on fungi of this sort. Apply per label instructions.

I think that you've got some bacteria mold there, or it could be the start of a fungus infection, after it's contaminated your grass.

Grows well under warm somewhat humid conditions, I often get this near where birds drop bits of food, and the food decays on my lawn.

This can cause weakening of the grass, if left on it. I'd brush it away, as best as you can, repeating where necessary. If there is any other stuff around, causing infection, remove this too.

Good light, air and drainage will help too. Grass once weakened can be prone to other damage too, so watch out for its health.
Use sulfur to treat the black dots organically. You can buy pellets in a nursery store, then make a solution in water to spray, or you can already buy the spray in a bottle.
