I've had good luck in Kenai with "Weed & Feed" by Artic-Gro. It's high nitrogen but also had a weed killer in it. Home Depot or Ace Hardware has it.
I broadcast it by hand (20 pounds covers 5000 square feet) in late May or early June (i.e. now!). It greens up the lawn and knocks down the fireweed and horsetails.
Mowing frequently also helps to favor the grass relative to the weeds. But, with 18-19 hours of sunlight, frequently means twice a week, alas.
If you are looking to green up your lawn, look for a fertilizer that has a high nitrogen content... usually 30% or somewhere around there. You can tell the nitrogen content on a bag of fertilizer by looking at the 3 numbers predominantly displayed on the bag... for instance 30-10-10. The 30 represents percentage of Nitrogen, the last two represent phosphorous and potassium. There is a Urea fertilizer out there that is 50% nitrogen, but I would shy away from that because you could easily burn your lawn if you don't apply it carefully. Scott's is a good brand name fertilizer to go with.
