My boxed japanese maple tree has several dead adbranches . Was this due to too much or too little water?

Question:The tree has several health branches and leaves but they are sparse.

Answers:
It sounds like too much watering. You maple is also a Deciduos tree, and leaves will fall off.I don't know what season your in at moment(winter here in New Zealand), but I would suggest you cut all the dead wood out, and prune back all the good wood by half. Then water only when the topsoil is dry. Then only once a week in Winter, and a couple of times in Summer.Check with your garden centre regards fertiliser. Some Maples need it, some don't. Good Luck!

My professors at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst always said to me, "Stop worrying about what killed it, and fix it."

Prune off the the dead branches. Cut off about an inch of growth on each live branch to an outside bud, to promote new growth, make sure there's good drainage in the box, and enjoy the tree instead of obsessing over it.
