How many days a week do you water your lawn and for how long?

Question:I was wondering in order to maintain a green lawn, I know you have to add fertilizer 4 times a year and of course take the weeds out, don't mow the lawn too short. Now how about the watering, how many days a week and for how long? Please I want to maintain a green lawn like my neighbors

Answers:
Grass has really long roots and can tolerate being watered only once a week. However, that being said if you're in a subdivision where they used crappy soil and watered it for you before you moved in, you've probably got really shallow roots and if you try to water once a week your grass will up and die on you.

Start out by watering only when you can tell the grass needs it, i.e., look for a bluish cast to the grass or when you step on it, it doesn't spring back right away. Hopefully, by doing this you'll encourage the roots to go deep and then even in the hottest summer, you'll only need to water once a week (or maybe twice) and your grass will be fine. Usually this style of watering is a flooding style. Go ahead and water until there's an inch of standing water on your lawn and then just let it soak in. If you're lawn is sloped then just water for a good 20 minutes or maybe even a little longer to get it nice and deep. Hopefully you've got nice soil with not a lot of compaction and you won't have problems getting the water down to the roots. If you have compaction or thatch, you might need to aerate or de-thatch (also called power raking) to get the lawn in shape for good watering practices...

By the way, you really only need to fertilize once a year and that's in the fall. This is when the grass is actively storing nutrients to its roots so you won't get lots of top growth. In the spring, the roots will release the nutrients up to the surface and you'll get nice even greening. If you fertilize in the spring, you'll just get tons of wild growth on top and have to mow more. Goodluck!

Once a week if it doesn't rain that week. Use a weed and seed type product to keep the weeds away.
Don't, grass is a weed it does best under adversity.
It really depends on how much rain you are getting. During the cooler spring and fall months, you can get away with watering it as little as once a week. During a really dry summer, almost daily. The main thing is to water it in the early morning hours before the heat of the day... also avoid watering at night at all costs as this can cause fungus growth.
