How do i keep my lawn green?

Question:

Answers:
1) Fertilize twice during the growing season, spring and late summer. Use a balanced lawn fertlizer - preferably from organic, not chemical, sources - that will provide both top growth and root strenghening.
2) Between those two feedings, fertilize with an iron/zinc chelate fertlizer, such as "Ironite". Be sure to sweep any granules off of concrete before you deeply water in (some iron feeding supplements will cause rust spots when watered). This will produce a deep green luster for many weeks and encourage strong root growth. It can make a striking difference in the color of your lawn if your soil is iron or zinc deficient.
3) Dethatch the lawn in late fall or winter and overseed at that time if you have any bare patches. Dethatching can be done with a thatch rake by hand, or you can rent a machine that will do it in no time.
4) Aeriate the soil at least twice a year. This can also be done by hand, or with a rented machine. Landscaping services can both dethatch and aeriate at relatively low cost with much less stress and strain to you.
5) Leave your grass cut high in summer, lower in winter - if you live in a warmer climate. Some people like to make the final cut of the season at about 1/2 inch lower than their summer cut. This should be done after dethatching.
4) Water deeply but infrequently. Rule of thumb: wait until lawn is dry enough that it won't pop back up when you step on it. (Remember, thumbs come in all sizes - this may not be the best test for your lawn.)

These are general rules. You may want to vary the routine for your given area or because of the type of lawn that you have. (These ideas would not be appropriate for a dicondra lawn, for example.)

Good luck!
