There is a creek in our back yard that floods when there is a heavy rain. How can we stop it from flooding?
Question:What are some things we can do without making it flood more in our neighbor's yard.
Answers:
When the creek is just a trickle in the summer, go down and dig it out really deep along the length of your property. Also, you can use the landscaping stones from home depot/lowes to make a retaining wall at the edge of the creek. This will help a lot, but on those really bad flooding seasons, you may still feel some effects.
make a trench and connect it to the storm drain.
Hoo boy - I don't know if there's anything you can do to stop the water... I suppose you could dig out a larger/deeper creekbed.
You can secure it, though - for instance, by lining the bed with large, heavy rocks. We've got a stream down a cliff in back of my neighborhood, and we got the creek filled in a little bit and lined with big boulders - to stop the erosion, so we don't all fall in ;) It was massively expensive, even with all the households pitching in...
Good luck on your creek!
You may want to try building an retaining wall. I would consult a professional before you build anything like that.
It floods because there is something restricting it downstream. Have someone from your town's engineering or maintenance department come and look to see what can be done to alleviate the problem.
