Planting my Plumeria in the ground? I live in S. California, is it wise to set it in the ground?

Question:I just want to make sure it will root, and become a tree eventually. Any advice for me?

Answers:
In Hawaii, plumerias are easy to grow from cuttings. On the Mainland, the safest method is to start with container plants. If you want to try from cuttings, start with long (15 to 24 inches) tip sections of stem taken in early spring and allow them to callus over for a week before planting. Short cuttings often succumb to rot.

Plumeria do best in hot, dry locations in full sun, but will grow in light shade. Not fussy about soil type, but cannot take cold, wet soils. Some tolerance of salt and wind. Tender to frost.

Good Luck!!

For best flowering, grow them in full sun or against a south- or west-facing wall that reflects light and heat. In the ground. Choose an area that does not get frequent, shallow water. Sandy soil is best (in Hawaii, plants thrive in lava rock), but any loose, gritty soil with good drainage will do. Fill the planting hole with water and see how long it takes to drain; if it isn't empty in a few minutes, plant in a container or raised bed, or on a mound
