How do I take cuttings from a pyracanthas?

I looked up pyracantha in my gardening books and it says that you take a branch cutting in late summer. You want a branch that has a "bark" on it...not a new sprout. Cut branch at an angle. The cut end is dipped in rooting hormone (you can buy powder-form rooting hormone at most garden centers and Wal-mart) and usually potted for at least long enough for a good root system to grow. Put cuttings in a rich potting soil and keep moist. Or you can try the old-fashioned way...I have only had this work a few times...but it can be done. First find a x-large glass jar...gallon pickle jars work well. Pick your spot where you want your bush to grow and dig hole...amend soil with organic material in hole and place your cutting dipped in rooting hormone at least 4-6 inches deep in hole. Fill in hole with remaining dirt...water well and then place glass jar over cutting. Keep soil moist and do not let dirt dry out. Leave on at least until the following spring. Make sure jar can't be knocked over where cold air will get to your cutting. A red brick placed on top of jar should do the trick. It kinda works like a mini greenhouse. Good luck!
