Any ideas for a garden that is basicly a big hill??
Question:I am just about to move into a new house,the garden is pretty big (good width,but a lot longer than it is wide) ,but most of it is quite a big slope...it is in quite a bad state and is very over grown...i cant wait to get in and get my hands dirty but i really dont have any ideas on what to do with it, and theres no way i can afford to get a pro in to sort it out..i would be very gratefull for any ideas or hints and tips.and if any one knows of any web sites with pics and ideas for gardens that are on hills or ave big slope they would be much appreciated??

First strim it down and actually see the size of the garden how flat it is. if it's a regular slope or staggered which could be helpful if you wish to terrace it. measure it and draw it to scale adding any features you wish to keep.
taller and thicker plants to the back
then tall less dense
then reduce the height as you come nearer to seating areas and views from your window / doors
get it flattened you cant do anything withough flat surfaces or have 2 levels like water featur on a cirular bricked up circle in the middle flwers round the edge bench at bottom right tree bottm left flowers at edge of circle top and bottom

lilies grow easily anywhere. also walmart sells wildflowers that come in a "roll". these are so easy to deal with. if you have local greenhouses you can typically buy 6-packs of flowers for a few dollars and the people that work there usually can tell you what will grow in your area. also family dollar has a pretty good selection of bulbs and seeds that are pretty uniform and will grow in most states. if it is a bank that is overgrown, i would suggest wildflowers because they blend in with what is already there and require little maintenance. clematis and wisteria are also pretty but they are more expensive. good luck
you nrrd to make it into several flat areas with rockery walls dividing the flat ares. Use the soil removef rom one flat area to build up the next.
Then you can have a flat patio, perhaps a raised lawn, and then a higher flowerbed area.
You could make the highest point a rockery and terrace the rest of the slope. That means cut steps into the hill and make flower beds. You could dig it all out and level it off but that will be much more work. good luck.
why no turn it into a "ROCK GARDEN" providing you have the available rocks - installing waterfalls, pools, screes and other features.

A lot depends on which way the slope faces. If you are lucky to have a south facing slope try terracing it and planting lots of sun loving plants for a Mediterranean garden. If north facing cold tolerant shrubs are your best bet.
