What to do with shoots that have grown on a Magnolia Tree?

Question:There are shoots growing on the trunk of my friends Magnolia tree and I was wondering what she should do. Could she use one of the shoots to try and start another tree?

Answers:
cut

You mean "suckers?" If so, you will have to cut them off every year. Lots of trees produce suckers.
Hi,

You could have a try at doing that. What you need to look at though is whether or not the tree was grown from a seedling or grafted onto an existing root stock.

It maybe that these shoots are not Magnolias.

Either way, if the tree is nice and thriving I would take them off and try planting a couple to see what pops up.
If they are growing near the tree, she needs to either cut them and put stump-killer on it(so they don't crowd the tree) or dig them up and start them. Definitely try to start them- trees are a lot of money... you can always sell it once it grows bigger. You might be able to get at least $50-$100 for it.
