I think so, I live in central GA. and just started growing them. I've noticed that they're very sensitive to heat, drought, and too much sun.
I've transplanted them into full shade, added a lot of spagnum peat moss and cow manure to the soil, and water them often. They're doing great now.
So, in central FL, keep them in full shade, add lots of pine straw around the plant - to keep the soil as cool as possible, water often, and enrich the soil. I have clay soil. Since you have sandy, call your county extension office and they can give you more details for your area.
