Is it ok to water a vegetable garden with water that has uranium in it?
Question:My folks just found ou that they have uranium in their water. They have put a filtartion system on the drinking water but not to the hose outside that they water their garden with. I was wondering if this would efect the vegtables they are growing. Thanks

I would call the local University, usually they have a horticultural section and the Professors and the Food and Agriculture people that usually keep an office on most campuses can give you a better idea.
I don't think is is wise to eat the veggies until you find out for sure...but....at least you can find the garden in the dark!

I would definitely NOT water the garden with the contaminated water. The veggies suck up the water along with the minerals and contaminants directly into their system. Since most vegetables are made up largely of water, you will be ingesting the uranium.
You should have a professional do a test to see how much uranium there is and ask how much of a threat it poses.

To me, the point of home growing veggies is so they don't have pesticides and chemicals.
Watering them with tainted water is not exactly organic...and I think could be potentially harmful
Maybe they should try getting a plastic barrel, and keep it under the down spout of their gutters...then they can use it to water the veggies.
I once ate a glowing chicken from Chernobyl. It was very tender and tasted a little like a cross between a baby seal...and a bald eagle.
a regular water softener willl remove uranium. this is a radio active metel. it is poison. it is acumilative and will eventually kill you. the water softener will become more radioactive each day and needs to be sheilded. also, you need to be VERY careful where the effluent from the water softener discharges.
