Best time to lay new St. Augustine sod in FL? How does the whole thing work?

Question:I need new sod (St. Augustine) for my lawn since most of the grass died and weeds are everywhere, do I need to clean up the existing lawn before laying the new sod on it or can I just lay the new sod on the existing lawn? I'm not sure how this works, any help would be appreciated!

Answers:
No, you actually need to remove all of the grass and the roots. this is going to be long and hard without proper tools, see is a local rental shop or maybe home depot/lowes has the tools needed to slide under the grass and tear it all up. then you must prepare the soil (get the rocks out, rake it flat, add nutrients if needed). once the sod is laid, you need to water often, especially in the summer. the time is fine so as long as it isnt freezing out, you will be fine so long as the grass is watered appropriately. it will cost moer, but you may want to look into a professional to do it (better safe than sorry)

You are late in the year to be doing this but not too late.
Kill the weeds with Round-up. Round-up over feritlizes the weeds and kill them. Later it will be a feritlizer and the ground should be watered well after the weeds die.

Whether you do the first step or not, lay down 3-5 inches of sand and smooth it out. Next about 2-4 inches of good soil.
Lay the plots of grass, cover (especially the edges) with 2" of soil and water well for a week.
