Go to a 2nd hand store and look for a large urn.
go to your local salvage yard, or business' that crate in heavy items, they will often just give you the crates, then buy potting soil and plant your little heart out.

An old aluminum wash tub or pale can be spray painted black or left it's natural color. If you have an old washtub or find one at a second-hand thrift store, it can be turned on it's side and bury about 1/3 of it. Buy a hanging plant such as petunias that bloom profusely. Build the soil up (add conditioned soil) into a slight mound. Bury the plant half way into the tub and it will look like the flowers are spilling out of it.
You could go to a thrift store and get some inexpensive deep ceramic bowls, or you could use pots if you don't mind the rusted look after a while. You could line your walkway with the large coffee cans with plants planted in them. You could use an old pair of leather boots if you don't more of a country look. You could use old sturdy wooden boxes. Some metal pails would also work. Just be sure that whatever you use will need to have some holes for proper drainage.
check out freecycle.com Best website ever. It it a website that you type in what you want in your area, and you might get a response. or you can SEARCH for the item. Or you can post things on the website that you want to give away. And there is NEVER any money exchange. I call it FreEbay. tee hee.

Go to the dollar store and see what they have. Several different size bowls grouped together would work. You can even make a 3 tier out of different sizes as well.
