I don't think opossums are ever a problem. Hav-a-hart traps aren't really humane. Wild animals already have territories laid out everywhere (even though you never notice it). And if you drop an animal in a new area it has to fight with all of the established animals and eventually gets killed by them or starves to death. It's better to just leave them where they are.
I set an acceptable cat trap from the Animal Shelter, I caught a baby opossum instead, it didn't kill it or harm it, we turned in loose at a large Los Angeles park. There will be plenty of food and water there to go on to live. they are not harmful animals. and really don't do any damage, so why kill it.
I think you should try to live in peace and harmony with all possible possums. I have never seen one, but I imagine that they are delightful furry things which would make very satisfactory little friends if treated kindly.
