YES MOST GOOD CITRUS TREE'S DO AND THEY ARE THE GOLDEN OLDIES..WELL DON'T GET RID OF IT. YOU CAN CUT OFF ALL OUTSIDE BRANCHES EXCEPT CENTER TRUNK AND BRANCH, THEN GRAFT ON ANY OTHER NONE THORNY CITRUS. YOU CAN HAVE A BRANCH OF LEMONS AND A BRANCH OF MANDARINS AND A BRANCH OF LIMES IF YOU WANTED TO...LOOK INTO GRAFTING THIS IS YOUR BEST OPTION.


I would guess that they are grafted to a root stock that has thorns (common) or that you have an Osage orange tree.
