What kind of grass is this? Or is it even grass? please help?

Question:I recently moved into a new rental house, When i came to look at the house the grass was all dead brown and crunchy, when i asked the prop. mgr and the owner of the house about it they told me "the grass is the kind that dies in the winter and will get greener after" So i just shrugged it off & moved in, Well anyways I have been watering that stupid grass for 3 months now and it still looks really bad. There are all kinds of weeds growing it in and even some weed/flowers. So about 3 days ago i put some Scotts® Lawn Pro® Super Winterizer™ With Plus 2™ Weed Control on the grass, it was what ace hardware advised me to use.
I water the "grass" every night for at least 30 minutes.
so here are my questions:
what kind of grass dies and comes back to life?
what else can i do to have a beautiful lawn like my neighbors?
how long do i have to wait untill my dog can go on the "grass" that i put the above stuff on?
this is what i used http://www.scotts.com/index.cfm/event/pr...

Answers:
If you live in the western United States, you may have buffalo grass or another variety of warm season grass. It goes dormant in early fall and does not green up until the weather gets hot. Many people plant this grass to conserve water as much of the west has been in a drought for over ten years. Be patient and watch for green when the weather gets hot in mid-June.

hey kt. i looked into the address you submitted and there was no picture.
Perinneal rye grass dies in the winter and comes back in the spring. You should fertilze 4x/year with weed control in the spring. You are watering all wrong. Water deeply 2-3x/wk + not every day. Daily watering causes shallow root formation and the grass will die. The best time to water is early morning, never at night because this can cause fungus. I would wait 24 hours before letting my dog on a pesticide treated lawn.
you need to get reid of that grass!!!(.)(.)
uh the only plant i have ever heard of that dies and comes back to life is the resurrection plant which only exists in sever desert situation and can by no means be mistaken for a grass i think you have been lied to although there are some grasses that go dormant in the winter but without knowing the specific grass or region you are in I can not tell you how to trick it out of dormancy but you can look it up cause it is possible... what you could try is to aerate your lawn throw some Bermuda grass seed over it and water the lawn this could increase water penetration in the old grass and the seed that i suggested is a highly competitive grass that grows thick and can withstand lots of traffic and most weather conditions

good luck
If the winter climate where you live includes snow and ice, then most grasses will die back during the winter and return during the summer.

One possible problem could be pests. There are plenty of insects that love to eat grass roots. Go back to ace and tell them it didn't work, and ask them if it might be bugs. They can give you something to handle the problem.

In the meantime, make sure you're pulling up the weeds as you see them, or they'll take over before you get your lawn back on track!
