Ants need food. Something in your yard is attracting them. Perhaps your plants have aphids which excrete a sticky residue ants use for food.

If they are the meat eating ants, maybe your yard has more soft creatures like grubs and worms the ants will eat.

Ants are also beneficial in opening up the underground soil, helping with drainage and oxygenation.

I doubt you can totally eliminate them. If we are talking about the biting ants. I use Amdro. For the other type, I Ieave them alone, well, that's not true. If they are nesting against the house I do away with them least they come inside.

You can chase them around the yard by taking a orange peel, go ahead and eat the orange, but put the remainders in a blender with a little water and puree. Then pour that over the ant pile.
Where do you live? If you are in or around California, you can try this website. It might have some ideas for you that may work.

You do need to get rid of the nest to kill the ants, otherwise, you're just killing the scouts. Baits work and as long as you keep them fresh and let the ants take them back, you'll probably kill the nest. They use VERY little pesticides and are low risk as far as pesticides go. It does depend on your location and the types of plants though.. Good luck!
Why dont you go out there and eat them?
