How do i go about planting catnip?
Question:I have several established plants that I bought as plants (as opposed to seeds). They have begun to have flowery things on some of the stems. I would like to plant additional seeds and am just wondering if I just take the flowery part and stick it in the ground or if I need to wait a while for seeds to form or if I can even do this at all??
Thanks.
Answers:
Catnip is part of the Mint Family. Its very invasive. I'm surprised it hasn't already spread like wild fire thru your garden.
If your just trying to get them to spread out in the same area just give it time it will on its own.
But if you are trying to start another area.
You can either take cuttings and use some root start (available anywhere fertilizers are sold) then stick in the ground. The cuttings should have some stem & some leaves. Keep well watered but not mushy. and they should take root.
Or let the flowers go to seed and pull the seeds off. And plant just like any other plant. The flowers will die then a week or two the seeds should form. Keep an eye on them. It seems like one day there weren't any seeds then suddenly the seeds are there and the ext they are gone.
Mint is one of the easiest plants to grow. So you shouldn't have any problems getting them started.
Are we talking about weed?
Yeah man, like the seeds is where it's at.
Oh, you said catnip. My bad.
I think you can do catnip from leaf cuttings.
Can you smoke catnip?
You can take cuttings and root them in water before planting but if you wish to plant from seed you must let the seeds come to maturity on the plant. The seeds pods will dry on the plant and then the seeds can be extracted.
I bought a package of catnip seeds and simply planted them in a pot with potting soil and watered them.Unfortunately my cat also found the plant and chewed it to pieces. It kept him from chewing my other plants. You can buy the seeds at any nursery that sells seeds.
Catnip is related to mint and will take over on it's own. It usually will 10-fold in a single season, so I would just let it do it on it's own.
