How do I keep carpenter ants from eating the roots of my vegetable plants?

Question:Since planting my tomato plants, they've been dying because big, black ants are eating the roots. They seem to be nesting (swarming) directly under each plant. Anyone know of a natural (non-chemical) way to keep the ants away from my garden?

Answers:
I've heard they do no like cayanne pepper.

kill them with poison that have not effect on your tomatos
Your a poet and don't know it.
i don't know if it will help, but sprinkling cinnamon around the foundation of the house will keep ants away, so maybe try sprinkling it around the tomatoes? i don't know if it would hurt your plants but i don't see why it would.
