Onions that have gone to seed?
Question:alot of my onions have got seed buds on but dont have very large bulbs what should i do
Answers:
There isn't anything you can really do apart from take off the seeds and hope they kick it up a gear.
Onions will start developing dome shaped tops, as soon as you spot them, chop them off, otherwise the plant will produce very small produce as it will be concentrating on producing seeds rather than onions.
You could let one go to seed and scatter, then you'll have lots of Spring onions next year! Big but is that you'll get no onion bulb from a seeded plant - it has fulfilled its destiny!
I grow perpetual (Welsh) onions to cut and come again, and let them seed ready for next season's salads.
Onions go to seed either in their second year, or as a result of overcrowding/lack of water. There's not much you can do at this time of year with seeding onions. Even if you take off the seed head, there is little likelihood of them fattening up.
Best to buy new sets of a later planting type and re plant.
dig up the onions, cut off the roots and tops being careful not to cut too close to the bulb. put them in a cool dark dry place till next year and replant. when the seed shoots start to form, cut them off. this is how the pros get the best onions.
