If a possum has infected a tree and is killing it is it a good idea too use poisons or to shoot it?

I doubt that the possum has infected the tree. Not a good idea either way. Talk to someone at a nursery about the tree and see what they would suggest.
Animals don't "infect " plants . Opposums might live in an existing hollow, but they aren't woodpeckers , and make holes .( Even woodpeckers are only working on dead wood .) The "possum" is just there, & is essentially irrelevant. Don't worry about it .
Possums do not infect trees at all. They may chew foliage or bark and allow a fungal infection or disease into the tree but there is not a flow of disease from possum to tree or trees could infect possums. That would be strange! This project is very strange. If the tree is sick then removing the possum will not do anything to help, besides stopping them eating more of it. I recommend the use of a quality " sling shot " and some half inch steel ball bearings or " shots as some call them .it is effective , and helps pass the time on a boring lunch break . You can even invite your friends , and make it an activity at your next cook out or gathering .., AND it is cheaper than poisons , and exterminators
i think it is the best to shoot it.Other animals can get to the ooisons.

Your whole line of questions about killing possums is completely inhumane. I hope your not teaching others by example the uneducated way to go about solving problems. It is literally impossible for a possum to be responsible for poisoning your tree! Instead of asking how to kill an innocent bystander why don't you ask about what could be causing the problems with your tree? If you absolutely must get rid of the wildlife that has decided to live it's life where you can observe and teach others about nature, then call a professional to remove it and place it where someone else may enjoy the learning experience. They are not the cutest of animals, but they do serve a purpose in the circle that is nature, to disrupt this may cause more harm than good.
Since it is impossible to possums to infect trees, there's no reason to get rid of him ~ but if you feel you must, there are much better ways to get rid of him than the litany of tortures you have been proposing.
1) borrow a hound dog from a neighbor for a couple of days. He'll scare the critter off.
2) Borrow a humane animal trap from Fish & Game or the Humane Society. Ask them where he can released safely once trapped.
3) Call Fish & Game and ask if THEY'LL trap him. They probably won't unless he is doing damage to your home & yard.
Poisoning an animal is always a bad, bad, bad idea. Not only is it downright mean, a dog, cat, or bird may ingest him. and die as well.
