How long does it take for fresh asphalt to harden?

Question:i just had an asphlat drive way put in and it was also sealed, this was done by professional contractor it been 3 days and it is still soft i can go back and forth on it but no turning. it is out in the hot sun only time it cools is at night. how long will it take to harden

Answers:
It should take around 7 days. I had mine done last year.

Properly compacted asphalt can be driven on in an hour or two and should be completely set as soon as it cools completely. The key here is properly compacted. Durability of asphalt is based upon compaction. Many driveway contractors use too small of a roller to properly compact the asphalt before it hardens, resulting in the problem you are experiencing.
i work for a asphalt company and you should be able to drive on you're driveway a couple of hours after there finished paving it. as for getting it sealed you should always wait at least a week or more before sealing new asphalt because when you apply the slurry ( that's the seal) it will pick up the new asphalt resulting in a bumpy look, when it should look smooth. if its been 3 days since they finished your driveway it sounds to me that when they prep your driveway they didn't compact it down well enough. which would make it seem spongy. hope that's not the case cause the only way to fix that is to tear it up and redo it.
