Does anyone know how to calculate how much top soil I will need to make a raised bed?
Question:I am re-doing my landscape beds, I cannot figure out how much top soil I will need, any help is appreciated.
Answers:
Length of bed multiplied by width of bed multiplied by depth of bed gives the volume of the bed. If you are measuring in feet the volume will be in cubic feet. If you are measuring in meters the volume will be in cubic meters. One cubic foot is 29 quarts (approximately) so if you buy potting soil in bags that are labeled in quarts you can see how many quarts you will need per cubic foot.
If in meters, the math is easy 1 cubic meter is approximately 764 liters
You can go here http://www.easysurf.cc/metric/cnver6.htm... to convert almost anything into anything else.
length of bed in feet X width of bed in feet X depth of bed in feet will give you cubic feet needed.
I wish that I had paid more attention in math class. The professor has my vote for the best answer. He answered your question and also answered my question, without my asking it. This site is great, so many answer soo little time. Good luck on your project.
Length of bed x width of bed x depth of bed = cubic feet necessary.
Example: a 6' x 6' bed, 6" deep
6' (length) x 6' (width) = 36 square feet
36 x .5 (depth) = 18 cubic feet of topsoil needed
My 16 foot by 8 foot by 6 inches deep took two yards of mushroom compost/topsoil mixture to do, with about 6 wheelborrows left over..
