I have a big hole in my back yard I think a gofer I put hose down it and turned water one but nothin its?
Question:getting bigger what can i do?
Answers:
Usually a gopher will leave a mound of dirt above active tunnel it is digging with no open hole. Very seldom will it leave the hole open since snakes would be able to gain access to the tunnel and snakes are natural predators of the gophers.
How big is the hole? Usually a abandoned gopher tunnel is 3-4 inches in diameter.
Gophers make a series of tunnels in which to travel. Sometimes the tunnels inter-connect connect with each other so that if a predator is after the gopher, the gopher can escape through many different routes.
I think by putting water into the hole you have collapsed any adjoining tunnels and created a larger hole.
Wait a couple of days to see if there is any repair activity going on in or around the hole. That means the gopher is still active in the area. If there is no activity then just fill the hole in.
If you want to get rid of the gopher, the only sure way is to use poisoned bait which is widely available.
Could still be a golfer or squirl. Try running the hose first thing in the am and stand there with a shovel to take care of it if it pokes it's head out.
You will often have to do the hose trick several times to catch the perp and if you are on a slope, you may never get him with a hose.
The bombs are marginally effective.
Cats work well. Home Depot sells deterant that may encourage him to go elsewhere.
