How do I control plant growth?
Question:I have lilies that are growing out of control and are taking up all of the room in my flower beds? How do I keep them from spreading and how do I trim down the ones I have now?
Answers:
Dig all of them up in clumps till you have the biggest part of them out of the garden.
Choose the strongest looking ones and place them about 6" apart for 1 plant per 6"...ok? You can use a shovel or knife to seperate them apart.
They are tubers which means they have nodules on them that make new shoots to produce another flowering plant. That is natures way of its survival. It is hard to keep them under control except for digging and transplanting about every 3 years.
Take the rest and use them along a wall somewhere, on a hill, give to neighbors, etc. They are swell for errosion problems.
In the fall cut the tops back to about 6"-8" from the roots. It will force the food back to the roots and cause them to grow hardier. Enjoy your fruits of your labor!
cut off the dead flowers. these will hold the seeds that transport throughout ur garden
Lilies are planted from bulbs and in time the bulbs will crowed the garden space as they multiply. When this happens usually the plants don't flower as well as they should. You need to dig up and thin out the bulbs. This will also help keep them in a maintained space and increase flowering.
The only way to control is to weed out the old(dig some up and plant in another bed or planter). there is no way to control the growth or slow down the growth. what my mom use to do is every year dig the old one up at the end of the year and put them in a cool damp place for storage, then at the end of 1 week before the end of winter plant them where you want them and that's how she maintained a smart, colorful and well maintained bed..
