Eventually and if you have acidic soils. The shells have to decompose and it takes a long time. The protein still caught inside the shells provides a minute amount of nitrogen through the protein content.
So yes, over time the egg shells will break down so don't expect results for several years. You'll be getting calcium...if your soil doesn't need calcium ammendment, then why bother?
On the other hand, there is some thought egg shells might stop slugs and snails from crossing over them....it would take a lot of shells to protect a garden and snails and slugs propel themselves with their slime which should coat the shells making them ineffective.
So up to you. If you are saving your kitchen organic trash for composting, throw in the eggs shells, otherwise don't make a special effort to save just the shells.
