What vegetables can be planted in Aug? I live in Detroit and my son cleared an area for a garden. Thanks!?

In Detroit, you've probably got 45-60 days of frost-free growing. Read the seed packets in the store to find out which plants fit into that growing window. Some fast plants are: lettuce, radishes, mustard greens, mizuna, turnip greens, beets, Swiss chard, spinach. Some vegetables also can take a frost, and don't need much more time, like carrots and kale. You could try peas, but I've found that young pea plants can take a frost, but mature ones can't, so you'd be lucky to get peas.
If you want tomatoes, buy some mature looking seedlings and put them in large self-watering pots. If a frost is threatening before the tomatoes are ripe, simply move the pots indoors overnight. This would also work with peppers, cucumbers, or squashes.
Go for fall veggies: Lettuce, bok choi, kohlrabi, carrots, radishes, peas...
Swiss Chard,Chinese Greens, Spinach, Radishes, beets. Thanks for reminding me, I'm going to plant some beets today.
Check with a county extension service in your area for ideas. Also a local garden store or home and garden store should be able to help you in your quest.
Fall planting of cabbage, broccoli, and similar "winter" or "fall" varieties should work. Its early enough yet to plant such things as spinach, loose leaf lettuce and other "salad" greens.
All the answers above are good ones. The only veg. I would add are bush beans. They grow fast and you should have a nice crop before cold sets in.
Enjoy your garden. :-)
