Arion ater is the scientific name for the European black slug. This species of slug can be black or orange. Scientists think that a slug’s colour might depend on where it lives. They believe that slugs living in colder and wetter climates tend to be black, and those from drier warmer areas are more likely to be orange. Research into this continues at several scientific labs.
